In order to measure and evaluate how well the objectives of a protected natural area are met, its management strategies and the impacts that these have on various aspects of land management, at a global level and in Latin American countries, have advanced in the generation of tools to analyze the effectiveness of protected area management, under reference frameworks and standards that guide the key elements that should be considered in such measurements. This allows managers to have information to generate adaptations in their strategies and actions, to make them more effective.
We must remember that protected areas fulfill different roles in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, both in the provision of key services to sustain life on Earth, and for the direct benefit of the communities that inhabit the territories. Hence, being able to carry out systematic, complete analyzes with recommendations for the improvement of territorial, spatial, terrestrial, and marine planning, takes on special relevance in decision-making areas for the adequate and adaptive management of natural resources. This, for the managing institutions of the Protected Area System, is of fundamental interest since they are constantly in search for better tools to increase their impacts in the conservation of protected territories.
Having evaluations and recommendations to improve the capacity of human teams to identify erroneous strategies and redesign them to be effective, is undoubtedly a priority for administrators/managers of protected and conserved areas, since it makes the use of their resources more efficient, while generating greater contributions to the achievement of the objectives for which they were created.

Planners, administrators, and managers who work in the territory linked to the management of protected and conserved areas.
What will we learn in this course?
Every participant strengthens their understanding of fundamental theoretical and conceptual elements to implement adaptive management in protected and conserved areas.
The course is structured in thematic academic units called Modules. Each module is focused on a topic, has an evaluation, and an approximate demand of between 2 to 3 hours per participant.
- Module 0: Introductory.
- Module 1: Basic Concepts on the Management Cycle of Protected Areas.
- Module 2: Basic Concepts on Adaptive Management of Protected Areas.
- Module 3: Tools for Adaptive Management.
- Module 4: Adaptive Management Application in a Case Study.

Contenido del Curso
This offer of self-manageable courses is an initiative developed within the framework of the project for the Integration of Protected Areas of the Amazon Biome (IAPA, by its acronym in Spanish), with the support of the University for International Cooperation through its Latin American School of Protected Areas.
The project (IAPA) is an initiative that is part of the vision for conservation based on the Amazon ecosystem, proposed since 2007 by the Latin American Network for Technical Cooperation in National Parks (REDPARQUES, by its acronym in Spanish), to develop a regional agenda for joint work around the protection of this important area of the continent.
The implementing partners of this initiative are the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the United Nations Environment Program (UN Environment), under the coordination of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Introducción al curso
A fin de medir y evaluar qué tanto se cumplen los objetivos de la existencia de un área natural protegida, sus estrategias de manejo y los impactos que estas estrategias tienen sobre diversos aspectos de la gestión del territorio, a nivel mundial y en particular los países latinoamericanos, han avanzado en la generación de herramientas para analizar la efectividad del manejo de áreas protegidas, bajo marcos de referencia y estándares que orientan los elementos clave que deben considerarse en dichas mediciones. Esto les permite a los gestores, contar con información para generar adaptaciones en sus estrategias y acciones, con el fin de que sean más eficaces.
Recordemos que las áreas protegidas cumplen distintos roles en la conservación y uso sostenible de la biodiversidad, tanto en la provisión de servicios clave para el sostenimiento de la vida en La Tierra, como para el beneficio directo de las comunidades que habitan los territorios. De allí que, poder adelantar análisis sistemáticos, completos y con recomendaciones para la mejora de la planificación territorial y espacial, terrestre y marina, cobra especial relevancia en los ámbitos de toma de decisión para la gestión adecuada y adaptativa de los recursos naturales. Esto, para las instituciones gestoras de los Sistemas de Áreas Protegidas, es de fundamental interés toda vez que constantemente están en búsqueda de mejores herramientas para incrementar sus impactos en la conservación de territorios protegidos.
Contar con evaluaciones y recomendaciones para mejorar la capacidad de los equipos humanos para identificar estrategias erradas y rediseñarlas para que sean eficaces, es sin duda alguna una prioridad para los administradores/gestores de áreas protegidas y conservadas, ya que hace más eficiente el uso de sus recursos, al tiempo que generan mayores contribuciones al logro de los objetivos para las que fueron creadas.

Estructura general del curso:
El curso está estructurado en unidades académicas temáticas llamadas Módulos. Cada módulo está enfocado en un tema, tiene una evaluación y una demanda aproximada de entre 2 a 3 horas por participante.
